Surface-conduction Electron-Emitter Display (SED) is an advanced display technology for flat panel displays that was developed by a variety of companies. SEDs utilise Nano scalar electron emitters to power the phosphors with colours and create an image. In general terms, the SED is an array of tiny cathode ray tubes, with each "tube" creating a single sub-pixel on the screen. SEDs combine the benefits of CRTs, such as the high brightness ratios they offer, broad viewing angles, and extremely quick response times, while also incorporating the packaging benefits of LCDs and other flat display panels. After much effort and time during the mid-and early 2000s, SED efforts started winding down in 2009, as LCD became the predominant technology. A typical cathode-ray tube (CRT) is powered by an electron gun. It is essentially an open-ended tube. On one side of the gun, electrons are created through "boiling" the electrons off of an iron filament, which demands a high amount of current and consumes a significant amount of the power used by the CRT. The electrons then accelerate and are directed into a rapid-moving beam that is directed towards the screen. Because of the tiny dimensions of the slits, the field required can be equivalent to a potential of around 10s of voltages.
